Hello June! The sun’s out. Backyard BBQs are smoking. And that means that it’s time to think about the best beer for your cooler.

Summer is always a great season for good beer. Breweries tend to release a lot over the next three months and we’re here to pare down what you should be drinking all summer long.

Below, we’ve compiled a shortlist of some of the best beers being released and available this May. Some of these are easier to find, with larger distribution; some you’ll have to travel for and do a bit of sleuthing to uncover. Either way, a good beer is always worth the trouble. Happy hunting!

WHITE GEIST BERLINER WEISSE — STONE BREWING

This is a beautiful beer through and through. Stone originally brewed their Weisse for the Berlin market last year. It caught on and now they’re importing it all the way to the US. That’s a big win for all of us stateside.

Their Berliner Weisse has a crisp tartness to it with a nice creamy underpinning that makes this one a great example of the style. Pop one of these cans open and enjoy one of the most refreshing beers on the scene.

TARTASTIC STRAWBERRY LEMON — NEW BELGIUM

Fruit infused beers get a bit of slack from purists. And, well, that’s too bad. New Belgium’s Tartastic line is the perfect summer drink. It’s very sweet-malty with a nice hit of sour lemon and fresh summer strawberry. This is the perfect “too hot day” beer to quench your thirst.

THAI STYLE WHITE IPA — UPSLOPE BREWING

IPAs aren’t going anywhere and this one from Colorado is a big reason why. Upslope’s Thai Style is a great ale with a juicy hoppiness with a nice dankness that doesn’t overpower the biscuity malts. If you’re on the fence about hoppy IPA, this one with pull you over to the hoppy side with its deliciousness.

IRISH RED ALE — MINER BREWING COMPANY

Out South Dakota way, you’ll find the brewery/winery Miner in the gorgeous Black Hills. While you won’t necessarily be able to find this one outside the Midwest/Great Plains, it will be worth the sleuthing. The beer is a very smooth ale with an amber hue and a nice mellow hoppiness that leans into its malt base. It smells like a brewer’s room with a hint of hop fields and goes down very easily.

DEF LEPPARD PALE — ELYSIAN BREWING CO.

Up in Seattle, Elysian is known for its funky and fun collabs. This summer they’re teaming up with the old-school rock band Def Leppard to bring us the joy of a classic Pale Ale through the lens of great English ale. Def Leppard Pale is a subtle beer. The hoppiness matches the sweet malt without either overpowering each other, bringing that perfect balance of tasty and easily drinkable.

110K + OT BATCH #6 — CIGAR CITY BREWING

Cigar City leans into summer with their beer releases down in Florida. This Imperial Stout was aged to damn near perfection in port barrels and then amped up with raspberries giving it a slightly tart and sweet edge. Overall, this one is a big beer that’s 100 percent worth tracking down and sipping on all summer long.

IMPORT PICK OF THE MONTH — SCHNEIDER WEISSE TAP 6 MEIN AVENTINUS — WEISSES BRAUHAUS G. SCHNEIDER & SOHN

Over in Beer Country, or Germany as it’s commonly known, Schneider Weisse continues to kill the hefeweizen game. Their Tap 6 is a dark and slightly dank hefe that goes down almost too easily. It’s refreshingly malty, has a high ABV, and doesn’t hold out on the wheaty goodness. This is the perfect beer to define a whole summer of day drinking, backyard grilling, and chilling in the shade.
